Burlington was a railroad stop and repair facility in the 1850s. The train depot, which began as a small train station, now serves as a gathering place for community events. When the train repair facility moved to Spencer, the absence of the industry made way for the coming of textile plants and other manufacturing facilities upon which the town was built.

Burlington’s historic district, existing along the streets of Fountain Place, West Davis, and West Front Streets, showcases architecture from the late 1800s through the early 20th century. An icon of history, located in City Park, is the famous Denzel Menagerie Carousel. Consisting of 46 hand carved wooden animals, this 1900s era carousel is enchanting to people of all ages.

Inside the train depot you will find 11 murals depicting scenes from important events in the town’s history. The Paramount Theater showcases plays, concerts, classic movies, and more in a 1929 style setting.
